Happy Me Made May!!!

Me Made May is a concept created way back in 2010 by Zoe Edwards. The basic idea is to improve your relationship with (and appreciate!) your handmade clothing. 

Some people go all out and wear only handmade clothing for the entire month and/or share their outfits on social media every day. I don't think that's realistic for most (and it should be fun, not overwhelming)! There is no right or wrong way to do it. You can learn more about MMM on Zoe's blog here.

One way to participate is to challenge yourself to wear your handmade clothing throughout the month. I have never participated in MMM, in part because I felt like I didn't have enough handmade clothes. But reading back over Zoe's blog (especially hte post lined above), I saw she emphasized the idea that there are no requirements, and no specific challenge, to Me Made May - it can look different for everyone. And you don't need a ton of handmade items to participate. 

Basically, MMM is just an opportunity to celebrate our sewing and garment-making community, reflect on our own making, and appreciate and all of the amazing things we've made! I don't often think about how special of a skill I have with sewing (and knitting!) - I just take it for granted. But it's something to be proud of! It's truly a skilled craft, something I've spent hundreds of hours, if not more, learning and practicing, and something that not many people can do (though I truly believe anyone can learn). And I'm proud of that!

I wanted to share about Me Made May with those who might not have heard of it before, and give people some encouragement to be proud of their makes and their skills - even if you're just at the beginning of learning how to sew.

This month, as our shop's way of participating, we'll host a giveaway each week, with a bigger one at the end of the month. See below for details!

We will do four giveaways during the month of May - one each Friday (except for the May 1st)!

How to enter:

• During the week, share a grid post (2 entries) or story (1 entry) on instagram of something (garment or otherwise) you made using materials from our shop, and tag @open.studio.sewing.
  • You can enter as many times as you wish!
• Giveaway items will be announced on social media (and maybe email) each week. Keep an eye out! 
• If you're not local and win the weekly drawing, we'll ship your items to you!
• On the final Friday (May 29) we'll do a larger drawing for an OSS gift card. :)

I just made this up, so if it's unclear or you have any questions, feel free to let me know! I look forward to taking this month to reflect on and appreciate my skills and handmade items, trying to find new way to wear them (or wearing them more) and thinking more deliberately about which garments I'd like to make that I will wear often.
