Absolute Beginner or Confident Beginner: Placemat & Napkin Set, October 4
6 in stock
This class will run Sunday, October 4th from 9am-3pm (or earlier if finished).
THE CLASS
Design and sew your own table settings! 🍽️ In this class, you'll learn to sew a placemat and napkin set with mitered corners, and trims as you desire. No prior sewing experience is required (though this class is also open to those who already know their way around a sewing machine). These are perfect scrap buster projects to make for yourself or for a friend.
You'll learn a variety of skills through sewing this set! Cutting and marking techniques, fabric selection, basic stitching, mitered corners, and working with interfacing will all be covered. This is a great project to make again and again for yourself or as gifts, and doesn't require much fabric, allowing you to use up scraps or showcase special fabrics and sewing labels.
You'll leave with a finished napkin and placemat (possibly multiple of each as time allows), a ton of new skills, and the confidence to start working on your next project.
SKILL LEVEL
This class is intended for Absolute Beginners - it's 100% okay if you've never touched a sewing machine before! We'll get you started from square one. If you've taken one of our beginner classes already, you're also welcome to join - this is a great way to gain more confidence in your skills.
WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
This class will cover the following skills:
✿ Sewing machine basics (threading, winding the bobbin, basic stitching, backtacking)
✿ Working with fusible interfacing
✿ Sewing mitered corners
✿ Measuring and marking techniques
✿ Understanding fabric grain
✿ Pressing techniques for a neat finish
✿ Working with trim such as ribbon or rickrack
✿ And lots more!
WHAT TO BRING
You will need to purchase fabric and notions in the shop before the class, but
there is no sewing pattern required for this project. Come by and we'll help you pick out something suitable that matches your style!
If you have your own sewing machine and want to use it, feel free to bring it with you (just make sure you have all the components including bobbins, foot pedal, etc). If you prefer, you can use one of our studio machines.
This class will be taught by Sarah.
-Please note that our shop will be open to the public during this class.
-This class is intended for adults ages 16 and up.
Refund & Cancellation Policy
Refund & Cancellation Policy
Classes and private lessons are non-refundable.
As a small business, we rely on sewing classes as part of our financial strategy. Our classes often fill up far in advance, and it can be difficult to fill a spot on short notice.
Of course we understand that things come up (even last minute!), so we ask that you read and agree to this policy before signing up for a class.
If you are no longer able to attend a class you signed up for, please email us at hi@openstudiosewing.com to let us know. If your class has a waitlist, we will do our best to fill your spot. If we are able to fill it before the class date, we'll issue you a refund in the form of store credit or to your original payment method. Store credit can be used for retail purchases or for future classes, and does not expire.
If we're not able to fill your spot, we will not be able to issue a refund.
If you are in a multi-session class and need to miss a day, you will not be able to make up the missed class. You're welcome to work on your project at home or book studio time to work on your own during shop open hours, or a private lesson (depending on availability) to get support to catch up.
Thanks for understanding and supporting our shop! ❤️
