THE CLASS

Many of us have mastered the basics of sewing and can construct garments with (some) confidence. But making sure your garment will fit well takes a little practice. Lara will walk students through choosing their best pattern size and how to adjust their correct size for the perfect fit. Along the way, we will cover some tricks for adding fitting insurance, taking changes back to your original pattern, and super-fast construction methods for test garments (also known as muslins).
Each student will be fitted individually in class, so please be ready to shop or bring another project to sew in case you find yourself with some down time.

SKILL LEVEL

This class is intended for Confident Beginners and beyond - you should know how to thread a sewing machine, wind the bobbin, and do basic stitching. You should also have constructed a garment from a sewing pattern before.

If you already have a test-garment or a garment you have previously made and you want information on fine-tuning the fit, please bring the garment to class along with the pattern you used to make it.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

Session 1
  • Choosing the best pattern size for you.
  • Preparing your pattern with fitting insurance.
  • Cutting out your muslin.
  • Construction tips for extra-fast test-sewing.
Session 2
  • Fine-tuning the fit.
  • Taking changes back to paper, so you can either make the garment again or use the same changes on a different garment.
  • More construction tips for your final fabric.

WHAT'S INCLUDED/WHAT TO BRING

Students will need to bring the following materials:

  • The pattern you want to fit.
  • Two sharp pencils.
  • Sturdy cotton fabric, such as muslin or quilting cotton, if the pattern you want to fit is for woven fabric. You can also buy fabric at the shop.
  • A knit fabric similar in weight to your final fabric, if the pattern you want to fit is for knit fabric. You can also buy fabric at the shop

Please wear the undergarments you plan to wear with the finished garment and bring the shoes you plan to wear.

If you have your own sewing machine and want to use it, feel free to bring it with you (just make sure you have all the components including bobbins, foot pedal, etc). If you prefer, you can use one of our studio machines.

This class will be taught by Lara of Twins n Needles.
